Frequently Asked Questions

Who are volunteer firefighters?
Firefighters are ordinary people just like you. The difference is that they are ordinary people that respond to extraordinary situations and use training, knowledge, skills, and experience to bring chaos to an orderly conclusion.  When not responding to emergencies, volunteer firefighters are like anyone else. They have normal jobs and work as landscapers, postal workers, utility workers, dog groomers, mechanics, maintenance engineers, loan officers, DMV clerks, quality control inspectors, delivery drivers, design engineers, college students, graphic artists, and the list goes on. These ordinary people have within them a sense of duty and a willingness to act and they take satisfaction in knowing they make a positive difference in others’ lives. They are generally humble about their accomplishments and actions but they are our heroes.

How much time is required to be a volunteer firefighter?
Hours vary depending on the station and the incidents you respond to. The average is between seven and eight hours, although many of our firefighters put in more hours.

What will my training cost?
All of your training is provided at no cost to you. You’ll receive professional training from experienced firefighters to ensure you’re ready to do the job.

Are there any out-of-pocket-costs?
No. Everything you need to be a volunteer firefighter, including training, equipment, and an annual physical, are provided to you for free.

How long will I have to wait to contribute?
You’ll be able to make an immediate difference once you’ve completed your initial training. As you gain more experience and training, you’ll be able to take on more responsibility.

How do I know which fire department to join?
Most volunteer firefighters join the station that serves their local community. Due to the way fire districts are drawn, the station closest to your home may not be the one that serves you. Fill out our contact form and we’ll make sure it gets to the appropriate station.
